Studio Artists

A number of artists will be invited to work at LOT in a residency capacity. This does not mean a live in situation, but intense work periods where studio space is provided in an active and thriving environment. These artists will be invited to base themselves at LOT and produce new work. There will be a range of artists with varying levels of experience. The intention with this mix is to throw artists into an invigorated working environment in which they can engage in dialogue with others.

Residency

An opportunity for artists beginning to establish a reputation to use the space to work with no strings attached.

Adam Dade & Sonya Hanney

Dade & Hanney are discrete conspirators in a process of unmaking. They conduct premeditated, formal procedures, marked by an investigative, somewhat mischievous inclination. Their video work Hiding (2001) shows them concealing themselves completely for a number of minutes in various public places, such as inside a photo-booth or under a dustsheet. In Stacked Hotel, behind closed doors and conducted in hushed tones so as not to attract undue attention from the hotel staff, Dade & Hanney dismantle the entire contents of their hotel room (including bed, wardrobe, curtains and bedside lamps), pile the objects in the centre of the room, photograph the stack and replace the items without trace. The photograph and video are the only remaining evidence of their time-consuming endeavour. The staff and subsequent guests are left with no indication of their secret activity.

Recent Graduate Residencies

The studios are programmed with the intention of enabling young artists to stay in the area during the difficult period directly after graduation from BA courses. In doing so they are able to keep in touch with peer groups developed during their degrees meaning that a new community of a younger generation of artists can be fostered. Over the course of 2005 two sets of recently graduated artists will have been provided with production space and curatorial assistance to support the development of new work. This new work culminates in the Young Residentials shows.
